Making repeat patterns with JWildfire’s Kaleidoimg Variation

By Michael Samuels and Heather Law

The Kaleidoimg variation is one of the most “fun” variations in Jwildfire. It uses an image you supply to create various repeat patterns of that image.

  1. Step 1

Click on New from scratch to start a new flameNew from scratch

  2. Step 2

Click on Add to add a variationAdd Variation

  3. Step 3

Change that variation to kaleidoimg. Where it says Params, you should see image_filename.Add variation

  4. Step 4

Click on the gear wheel to the far right. This should bring up a window where you can browse for an image or photo. Most image file types are supported.Click Gear Icon

  5. Step 5

Click Open to select the image file you want to use.Select File

  6. Step 6

If the list of the parameters isn’t already showing, click on the little green arrow to make it appear.Select Parameters

  7. Step 7

Scroll down to type. The parameter for this is set to zero by default.Change type

  8. Step 8

To see your selected image as a pattern, change the 0 to 1 or another number. Different numbers or changes in several of the parameters, not just the Type settings, will result in different patterns using your image.Change Mode

You can’t break the computer by pushing buttons or changing values in the parameters. So go out and experiment with other settings and see what happens. There are no rules for exploring fractals, so there’s no such thing as a mistake – just a new design idea

Have fun!
